Between Layers
Ein Bodhi Blatt aus Vietnam, mit seiner herzähnlichen Form, steht im Zentrum von Xuan Dung Burckhardts neuester Werkserie – Between Layers. Das Skelett des Blattes wird in einem längeren Prozess freigelegt. Dadurch werden Teile des Blattgewebes und das Chlorophyll herausgelöst, so dass das Blatt transparent und lichtdurchlässig wird. Zurück bleibt ein filigranes, fragiles Geflecht, das gerade in seiner Reduktion an Präsenz gewinnt und innere Stärke offenbart.
Das Prinzip des Freilegens setzt sich in Burckhardts Bildsprache fort: Ausgehend vom Action Painting entwickelt sie Werke, in denen Bewegung und Stille präsent sind. Diese entstehen im Zusammenspiel von spontaner Geste und bewusster Setzung von Farbe, Material und Form. Farbe fliesst und entfaltet sich im Zusammenspiel mit Raum und Licht. Transparenz macht die Ebenen durchlässig. Sichtbares und Verborgenes überlagern sich in einem offenen Spannungsverhältnis.
Burckhardt verbindet Materialien und führt sie in neue Zusammenhänge. Schnur, Knöpfe und das Bodhi Blatt treten in Beziehung. Die Schnur stützt, während das Blatt in seiner Fragilität seine Beständigkeit bewahrt. Japanische Zeitungspapiere symbolisieren das Weltgeschehen und dienen als Bildträger, so dass sich die Schriftzeichen lösen und als Geflecht aus Linien und Formen erscheinen. Betont wird das Zusammenspiel von Gegensätzen: Das Laute der Welt und die stille Präsenz des Blattes; das Fragile und das Tragende; die Vielfalt und die Einheit.
Mit Between Layers führt Burckhardt ihre künstlerische Auseinandersetzung fort, die sie bereits mit Flowing Worlds 2021 und Flowing Junction 2023 begonnen hat. Burckhardt stellt seit 2018 regelmässig aus.

A Bodhi leaf from Vietnam, with its heart-like form, lies at the center of Xuan Dung Burckhardt's latest series of works – Between Layers. The skeleton of the leaf is revealed through a lengthy process, during which parts of the tissue and the chlorophyll are dissolved, rendering the leaf transparent and permeable to light. What remains is a filigree, fragile web that gains presence precisely through its reduction, revealing an inner strength.
The principle of revealing continues throughout Burckhardt's visual language: drawing on Action Painting, she develops works in which movement and stillness coexist. These arise from the interplay of spontaneous gesture and the deliberate placement of color, material, and form. Color flows and unfolds in dialogue with space and light. Transparency makes the layers permeable. The visible and the hidden overlap in an open tension.
Burckhardt combines materials and brings them into new relationships. Cord, buttons, and the Bodhi leaf enter into dialogue with one another. The cord provides support, while the leaf, despite its fragility, retains its resilience. Japanese newsprint evokes the noise of the world and serves as a picture support, allowing the written characters to dissolve into a web of lines and forms. Emphasis is placed on the interplay of opposites: the loudness of the world and the quiet presence of the leaf; the fragile and the sustaining; multiplicity and unity.
With Between Layers, Burckhardt continues the artistic exploration she began with Flowing Worlds in 2021 and Flowing Junction in 2023. Burckhardt has been exhibiting regularly since 2018.
